3 Points Of The Game

#1: GET BACK ON TRACK
Having endured back-to-back losses, the Roughriders aim to regain their winning ways on Saturday against the Toronto Argonauts (5 p.m., Mosaic Stadium). The offence looks for a return to form after being limited to one touchdown in each of the past two games. The Roughriders (6-4) remain in a strong position — second place in the West Division — but sights are set considerably higher by the defending Grey Cup champions. Worth noting: In 2025, the Roughriders answered a two-game September slump by registering back-to-back victories and clinching first place overall in the CFL. After the second loss in succession, the 2025 Roughriders won every game of consequence for the remainder of a history-making season.
#2: FLAGGING THE PROBLEM
Head Coach Corey Mace pointed to penalties as an issue following Sunday’s 30-16 loss to the B.C. Lions. The Roughriders’ overall penalty count — seven for 72 yards — wasn’t eyebrow-raising but, as Mace noted, the yardage (and points) sacrificed due to the infractions far exceeded the distance that was marched off by the officials. Penalties negated a 49-yard touchdown reception by Quali Conley, a Conley run that would have allowed the Roughriders to scrimmage the ball on the Lions’ nine-yard line, a 21-yard fumble-return touchdown by Nick Wiebe, and an interception by Jonathan Edouard. Six days earlier, Saskatchewan had been flagged eight times for 107 yards — both totals being season highs for the Green and White — during a 26-19 loss in Hamilton. Despite a recent flurry of flags, Saskatchewan is the third-least-penalized team in the league, so it is reasonable to expect a return to the norm. That is certainly the expectation from Head Coach Corey Mace, who delayed the start of Wednesday’s practice in order to extend a meeting that pertained to penalties.
#3: ARGOS AT MOSAIC, PART 2
Here’s a first: Roughriders are facing an East Division team at home for the second time during a regular season. A June 26 visit to Mosaic Stadium was technically a home game for the Argonauts, who were bumped out of their venue — Toronto’s BMO Field — by soccer’s World Cup. The Argonauts won the teams’ first meeting, 40-34, even though the Roughriders enjoyed a healthy advantage in net yards (475 to 393). Saskatchewan’s Trevor Harris threw for 409 yards. Toronto’s Chad Kelly countered with 321. Both quarterbacks threw for two touchdowns. Kelly also ran for a major. Look for another top-drawer quarterbacks’ duel on Saturday, when the Roughriders will play on Aug. 29 for the first time since 1992.
