3 POINTS OF THE GAME
Rob Vanstone
1. HOME SWEET HOME
The Roughriders are poised to play at Mosaic Stadium for the first time since Sept. 6, when the Green and White posted a 32-26 overtime victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the 61st Labour Day Classic. Back-to-back losses have ensued for the Roughriders, who will play three of their final four regular-season games at home — beginning on Friday, 7:30 p.m., against the Calgary Stampeders. At 8-6 and part of an ever-tightening West Division, a home-field win would be a tonic for the defending Grey Cup champions. The desired result on Friday would also secure a CFL playoff berth for the Roughriders.
2. FOOTBALL FIXES
Leading up to Friday’s game, the Roughriders are emphasizing “explosion plays and red-zone opportunities, both offence and defence,” in the words of Head Coach Corey Mace. The B.C. Lions had completions of 59, 56 and 38 yards in Friday’s 31-24 home-field victory over Saskatchewan. All three of those long passes were part of touchdown drives. B.C. was 4-for-5 inside the red zone. Saskatchewan, which had a long gain of 30 yards, was 2-for-5. On the season, Saskatchewan is tied for third in the league in red-zone TDs (37), with a conversion percentage of 69.8. Also worth noting: Saskatchewan has allowed the fewest big plays (26), so Friday’s game was aytpical.
3. KeeSEAN WATCH
KeeSean Johnson will soon enter an exclusive fraternity — consisting of Roughriders players who have reached 100 receptions in a season. Johnson needs five catches to join Don Narcisse (123 catches in 1995), Joey Walters (102 in 1982), Craig Ellis (102 in 1985) and Curtis Marsh (102 in 2000). With 95 catches for 1,178 yards this season, Johnson is already tied with Narcisse (1998 version) for the Roughriders’ fifth-best receptions total. Johnson is on pace for 1,515 receiving yards, which would put him fourth on the team’s single-season list.
