“A little moment captured in time”: Duncan-Busby completed picturesque play.
Rob VanstoneThe play was picture-perfect.
Photographer Arthur Ward captured the priceless image of a Trevor Harris pass settling into Dhel Duncan-Busby’s outstretched hands for an 11-yard Saskatchewan Roughriders touchdown against the Toronto Argonauts on Saturday at Mosaic Stadium.
“It’s just like a little moment captured in time,” Duncan-Busby said after Wednesday’s practice.
“Honestly, the catch in the picture looks a lot harder than it was in the moment.”
Such is the perception of a professional pass-catcher, whose livelihood is dependent on the ability to make such plays.
“I lined up and looked at the leverage of the defender,” Duncan-Busby recounted. “I saw that he was playing inside leverage and I was like, ‘You know what? I’ve got him.’
“I kind of knew it was going to work and I knew Trev was going to put it up for me and give me a good ball. He put it where only I could get it.”
The catch, at 11:31 of the first quarter, gave Duncan-Busby his career-best fourth aerial TD of the season.
“Dhel ran a fantastic route and was able to make an over-the-shoulder catch,” Harris said with a smile. “It was a pretty fun one.”
The Roughriders’ quarterback suspected the play would turn out as designed from the moment he released the football.
“Sometimes, if there’s no wind or there’s not a heavy wind and you let one go, you can kind of tell, ‘That’s the ball,’ ” said Harris, who quarterbacked Saskatchewan to a 28-24 victory on Saturday.
“Or, there are times when you think, ‘I might have overthrown him by a yard,’ and you get surprised. The wind games are the ones where you let it go and you’re like, ‘Hopefully that’s right.’ It’s kind of like in golf, where you’ve got to range-find with the wind.”
TOP-10 TERRITORY FOR TREVOR
Harris is just 127 yards shy of tying Doug Flutie for 10th on the CFL’s All-Time passing-yardage list. Flutie, a six-time winner of the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player award, amassed 41,355 yards over eight seasons (1990-97).
“Whenever you hear a name like that and you think, ‘Wow, I might be able to pass that guy,’ it’s insane,” Harris said.
“It’s something I’m truly grateful for. God is blessing me immensely. I’m just trying to do the best I can every single day to glorify Jesus through my work ethic, the way that I treat other people, and putting it on the line each and every day for my teammates, our fans and, most importantly, my family and Jesus.”
Harris is poised to enter a top 10 that also includes Anthony Calvillo (79,816 yards), Damon Allen (72,381), Henry Burris (63,639), Ricky Ray (60,736), Danny McManus (53,255), Kevin Glenn (52,867), Ron Lancaster (50,535), Bo Levi Mitchell (45,426) and Matt Dunigan (43,857).
“I’m definitely not in that echelon with those guys,” Harris said. “When I look at that list, I’m like, ‘There’s an outlier there — a guy who doesn’t belong.’ That’s kind of what I’ve always seen it as. I think it’s my way of keeping myself hungry.
“My mom had actually mentioned it to me. I thought, ‘What a blessing it has been to play in this beautiful country and league for this long.’ To have an opportunity to pass a name like (Flutie) is truly remarkable.”
As well, Harris is only 15 completions away from tying Lancaster (3,384) for eighth All-Time.
Sixteen completions from now, Harris will mark his 1,000th as a Roughrider.
